Edward George WHITEHEAD

Our dear Edward George Whitehead passed on from Earth on May 29th, 2025. Ed grew up in Crown Point, Indiana. He was the youngest boy in a family of 8, with two siblings dying in infancy. As a child he loved to play sports with his brothers. He would often say his favorite meal his mom made for him growing up was beef stew. The Great Depression left a strong imprint on his childhood, and he always said that nothing beats a good pot of meat and potatoes. After graduating high school, Ed served four years in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Japan. Afterwards, Ed returned to Crown Point and worked for a short time in the local mills. He then was hired for the United States Postal Service and worked as a postal carrier for the remainder of his career. At a Sunday Post Office picnic, Ed met the love of his life, Patricia Vigil. Pat’s brother-in-law Marty Chnupa was a fellow postal carrier. Ed and Pat were wed at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on October 5th, 1963. In the years following, they welcomed their children into the world: Rebecca, Timothy, and Patrick. In 1973 the family made the move to Missouri. Ed worked as a postal carrier for the city of Ballwin for 19 years. His walking route ensured he was a fit and healthy man. His retirement in 1992 allowed him the time to enjoy his hobbies. Ed was often in a bowling league and horseshoe league. He enjoyed time with a few close friends and especially his family. A day did not go by without tuning into a ball game (Go Cards!). Always, a stack of library books sat next to his chair. He was an avid reader and would read about a book a day. You could often find him walking his dog or maintaining his rose bushes. In 2014, a routine medical check-up revealed that the arteries leading to his heart were 90% clogged. At the ripe age of 83 he was permitted to have a quadruple bypass heart surgery. Ed recovered well and this surgery granted his family 11 more years of his Earthly presence. Towards the end of Ed’s life, he declined from dementia. He died at his O’Fallon, Missouri home with family on the afternoon of Thursday, May 29th, 2025, at the age of 94. Preceding Ed in death are his parents, William and Nellie (Dillabaugh); his siblings Arthur (Eva), Alan (Marietta), Herbert, Roger (Mary), Joyce (Frank); grandson Adam. Ed will be forever loved and remembered by his wife Pat of 61 years, and also his sister-in-law Donna; children Becky, Tim (Martha), and Patrick (Gayle); grandchildren Casey (Jeff), Zach, and Nick; and great-grandson Caius. A second great-grandchild is expected at the end of the year. In your charity, please pray for the repose of Edward’s soul. Eternal rest grant unto Ed O Lord, and may your perpetual light shine upon him. May Ed’s soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Visitation, rosary, and Mass will be at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in O’Fallon, Missouri on June 23rd at 9am. Interment to follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
