David Jen HAYES Sr.

Today we honor and remember David, a man whose presence brought warmth, laughter, and unwavering love to everyone fortunate enough to know him. David passed away peacefully at home on November 22, 2025, surrounded by the family he cherished so deeply. He is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel D. Hayes and Bernita Hayes, and is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Hayes; his children, Julie Hayes and David Hayes Jr.; and his beloved grandchildren, Nicholas Ogles, Jewel Potsos, Cheyanne Hayes, and Hayden Hayes. His family was his greatest joy, and he carried them in his heart through every season of his life. David lived a life defined by service, dedication, and talent. He proudly served his community as a police officer and later as a detective for the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department. His commitment to protecting others spoke to his courage and sense of duty. After his career in law enforcement, he went on to retire from McDonnell Douglas/Boeing, continuing his lifelong habit of hard work and craftsmanship. David was a man of many gifts. He worked alongside his father in the family autobody shop, where his skill and creativity shone—he was not only talented with his hands but also a true artist at heart. He loved the outdoors, and some of his happiest memories were made at the family cabin, where he spent countless years fishing, shooting, and enjoying the quiet beauty of nature. He filled his life with hobbies that brought him joy. David loved woodworking, gardening, and especially riding Harley Davidson motorcycles with Barbara. Whether cruising down an open road or tending to his garden, he approached everything with passion. He even loved rhyming while he sang—another small, joyful expression of the creativity woven into who he was. David had a gift for connection. He could talk to anyone, anywhere. He made friends everywhere he went, and people were drawn to his warmth and easy sense of humor. For 55 years, he was married to the love of his life, Barbara. They met when she was 17 and he was 22, back when David was a young police officer and Barbara worked at a donut shop. Their love story is one marked by commitment, loyalty, and a deep, enduring bond that carried them through decades of shared memories. Above all, David will be remembered for the great love he had for his family. He was a funny, kind, caring, and compassionate man who touched the hearts of all who knew him. His love, his laughter, and his presence will be missed beyond measure. In the days ahead, we will honor David with a celebration of life, where his story, his legacy, and the impact he made on those around him will be remembered. Details will be announced at a later date. Though we grieve today, we also give thanks—for the years we had with David, for the love he shared so freely, and for the beautiful memories that will continue to live within us. May his spirit remain a guiding light, and may we carry forward the kindness, humor, and generosity that defined his life. May he rest in peace.
