Anne Claire VOSS

Our beloved mother, Anne Claire (Reis) Voss, passed from this life, surrounded by those she loved. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend — and as a woman of deep faith, a gifted artist, a lifelong advocate for social justice, and a cherished member of St. Louis’ Windermere Place community. For more than 60 years, Anne called the special Windermere neighborhood home, where she raised six children and built lifelong friendships with cherished neighbors who felt more like family. Just weeks ago, we gathered to celebrate Mom’s 99th birthday, with family and friends who traveled from across the country to be with her. Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; brothers Thomas (Cooke) Reis and Andy Reis; sister Mary Walk; and son Gerard. She is lovingly survived by her children — Jason (Debbie), Robert, James, Tom, Matthew (Michele), and Marianne Voss Roberts — and grandchildren, Jennifer Voss, Trevor Voss, Nicole Roberts, and Siboney Voss. Anne and Robert met as students at Blewitt High School, where they discovered their shared love of art. After graduating in 1944, they married on January 29, 1949, at St. Rose of Lima Church. Anne was an avid ice skater and tennis player, and a woman of steadfast Catholic faith who attended Mass several times a week. Together, she and her husband, Robert, helped preserve the Shrine of Saint Joseph at 1220 North 11th Street in St. Louis. Throughout her life, Anne paired her compassion with action. She worked in real estate and civil rights, championing inclusion and equality. She served as chairwoman of the West End Community Conference, legislative vice president for Human Rights of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, Human Rights Chairman for the St. Louis area of the Missouri Association of Social Welfare, and as a board member of the Federation of Settlement Houses. Her activism — including a school busing protest covered by The New York Times — earned her the 1963 B’nai B’rith Award for Outstanding Contribution to Intergroup Understanding. Anne lived her faith through service, her art through beauty, and her love through family and friendship. A memorial Mass celebrating her life will be held on Monday, October 27th at 1:00 p.m., at the Shrine of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1220 North 11th Street, St. Louis, Mo. 63106.
