Marlene Gladney EDWARDS

January 18, 1935 - September 18, 2019

In the winter of 1935 Marlene Gladney Edwards was born on January 18th in Greenville, Mississippi. Her parents were Moria Lee Gladney and Glover Gladney. As a young adult Marlene made the decision to leave the Mississippi Delta and travel to St. Louis Missouri, a place that would be her home for many years to come. Having excepted Christ at an early age, Marlene quickly united with Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, the place where she worshiped for over 50 years. Marlene was a member of the Sanctuary Choir and she loved to sing. She was also a member of a community group called the Jordan Singers. Her love for music was demonstrated by her participation in many music workshop conducted by local musicians well as musicians from other areas. Marlene began her work career in the hotel industry but after a number of years that changed. With the help of the man who would become her husband, Marlene began working in the hospital industry. That man was Jimmie, better known as James, Edwards. After 18 years of service in the city’s hospital, Marlene retired from Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Marlene was a very private person who allowed God to know her inner thoughts and feelings. She enjoyed a wonderful life with her husband and she was very close to her baby sister Matilda. Her smile was contagious and she had a laugh that was uniquely her own. She loved her family and her family loved her. Marlene will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves to cherish her memories a loving husband James Edwards, St. Louis, MO., one adopted daughter Pauline McGee of New Orleans, LA; brother, Rev. Richard McClendon of Chicago IL; sister, Matilda Barnett of Flint Michigan; aunt, Pearl Harps of Greenville MS; four nieces and two nephews, seven great nieces and four great nephews; two special cousins Doris May of Milwaukee WI and Dr. Dorothy Travis Moore of Oak Creek, WI; numerous cousins, other relatives and many friends.
