Walter Bixby "Bix" FISHER

Walter Bixby “Bix” Fisher was born on April 25, 1954, in Springfield, Missouri, and passed away in St. Peters, Missouri, on Saturday, October 25, 2025. The son of Joseph and Martha (Adams) Fisher, and brother to Joseph A. Fisher, Bix grew up in Springfield, attending Parkview High School. A youthful tinkerer with a love for electronics, he built numerous Heathkit projects, including a television for his parents. After high school, Bix attended Drury College (now Drury University), graduating in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He was drawn to Drury not only for academics, but for the opportunity to play in the jazz band under the direction of Dr. Don Vern Joseph. During his college years, he met his future wife, Jane Maschmeier, and became a proud member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Music was central to Bix’s collegiate life; he played bass in the Drury jazz band and with his friends and fraternity brothers. One of his fondest memories was participating in Drury’s summer jazz camps alongside the Stan Kenton Orchestra, whom he was honored to tour with for a short time one summer. Following college, Bix moved to St. Louis to be with Jane and pursue a career in law enforcement. The two married on August 7, 1976, in Ferguson, Missouri, surrounded by family and friends. He completed the police academy in 1977, joining the Ferguson Police Department, where he served with distinction. During this time, Bix and Jane welcomed their daughter, Emily followed by their son, Richard, a few years later. After seven years in law enforcement, Bix transitioned into the private sector, working as an operations manager for several companies, including fifteen years at Grasser Electric, before retiring in April 2024. An avid sports fan, Bix became an inaugural St. Louis Rams season ticket holder. As a weather enthusiast, he trained as a weather spotter and enjoyed following the the storm-chasing community. His tinkering never ceased, Bix delighted in restoring pinball machines, traffic signals, and vintage police light bars. Music always remained close to his heart, as he often played along to his favorite records or sat in with the “Smash Band.” His other passions included trainspotting, and an appreciation for nature, in particular admiring the hummingbirds and bluebirds that would frequent the feeders in his yard. Bix was deeply devoted to his family and loved supporting them through every endeavor. Later in life, he embraced his role as “Pawpaw” to his grandkids, and was also lovingly known as “U.B.” (Uncle Bix) by his nieces and nephews. He loved to tell people that he was “probably the only Bix you’ll meet today.” Bix is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Jane (Maschmeier) Fisher; daughter, Emily (John) Briggs of Wentzville, Missouri; son, Richard (Mandi) Fisher of Webster Groves, Missouri; and his cherished grandchildren: Alyssa, Connor, Ellington, and Emery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Martha Fisher, and his brother, Joseph A. Fisher. Bix will be remembered for his humor, wit, curiosity, devotion to family and friends, and missed by all who knew him.
