Nelson STOVALL

Nelson Stovall, age 74, passed away on September 12, 2014 in Lake St. Louis, Missouri surrounded by his loving family. Nelson was born April 9, 1940 in Starkville, Mississippi the son of Nathaniel and Edit (Macdowell) Stovall. Nelson was a hard worker providing for his family at the The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District. Nelson started work for them in 1961 working his way up to Supervisor of the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District. He retired from there after forty one years of service. Nelson is survived by his three loving daughters; Veronica Stovall, Tracie and (Alfred) Earl, Ashley Stovall, his one loving son; Nelson and (Hamus) Stovall, one loving brother Roosevelt and (Morrie) Stovall, Seven loving grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. His clearly devoted close friend Miss Liz. Nelson was a 1999 Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee Nelson started boxing in 1950, when he was ten years old, at the Vashon Community Center at Compton and Market Street. In 1951, Nelson traveled to the Caprice Gym, located in the Pruitt-Igoe Projects for this first organized match. After a less than auspicious start, Nelson started a steady climb that culminated in winning the City Tournament in 1962. Nelson competed as a novice middleweight for the Tandy Gym under the guidance of Sam Westbrook. In 1963, Nelson began his Golden Gloves Career in the open middleweight division by knocking out eight consecutive opponents in one-week span to win the championship. In 1964 and1965, Nelson continued his reign as champion of the open middleweight division. These two tournaments included nine more knockouts on his way to the crown. In 1966, Nelson moved up one class to light heavyweight. He continued his winning ways by knocking out five opponents in route to another championship. He had succeeded in winning championships for the four years he fought in the Golden Gloves Tournament. In 1967, Nelson Stovall turned professional after a successful amateur career of sixteen years. He fought in both the light heavyweight and heavyweight classes. His career record as a professional was 18 wins, 17 by knockout and 0 losses. Nelson fought throughout the Midwest, until his retirement from the ring.
