Marian Frances LONNING

Marian Frances Lonning, died peacefully Monday, November 27th, 2023, at The Boulevard of Wentzville with her loving family by her side. She was 93 years old. Marian Frances Morren was born on January 30, 1930, in Grand Rapids MI. Marian married the love of her life, James Carroll Lonning on December 13th, 1957, who also preceded her in death. Cherished sister of George Morren of Zeeland Michigan, Gary Morren of Holland Michigan, and deceased brothers Johnny, Andrew, and Nelson. Loving mother and mother in law of Robert D. (Karen) Lonning and Patricia A (Henry). Slodkowski. A cherished grandmother to 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Besides being a wife and mother, Marian wore many hats in her professional life. Marian was a graduate of the Pine Rest Christian Hospital School of Nursing and later a licensed practical nurse (LPN). Before coming to Missouri in July 1968, Marian worked extensively with people with developmental disabilities as a nurse and teacher. After moving to Missouri, Marian was instrumental in founding a Day Activity Center Auxiliary in St. Charles County for children in February of 1969 and later transitioning to an adult Day Activity Center after the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was passed and the children at the Activity Center were able to go to school. In retirement, Marian continued to work for the betterment of the disabled by serving on the Handicapped Facilities Board and Community Living Board of Directors, for which one of the buildings was later named the “Lonning Center”. She was recognized in 2008 with the Legacy Award, as the first recipient of the Sherman T. Timmons Award from Community Living. She took groups of individuals with disabilities to camp wonderland at Lake of the Ozarks for many years. Marian was also an advisor to the Mother’s Club/Developmentally Disabled Activity Center. Visitation and Funeral Services will be held on Thursday November 30th at 10:00am at St. John’s U.C.C. with interment at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, 6th and Booneslick, in St. Charles. In lieu of flowers, family and friends wishing to honor Marian’s memory contribute to the Lonning Center, Community Living or St. John’s U.C.C (Wolfrum Road).
