Richard Robert HENSLEY

Richard Robert Hensley, 78, of St. Peters, MO, died Sunday, August 21, 2022. He was born on February 10, 1944, in Mt. Vernon, IL. Rich was a professional drummer/percussionist for over 60 years and taught drums and various percussion instruments at Fazio’s (n/k/a Ernie Williamson Music) in Ellisville for over 30 years until his retirement this past March. He had a wonderful work ethic and never missed going to work to teach. Rich served his country in Korea during peace time in the 1960s. He had interesting stories to tell about his duties (and adventures) in Korea. After receiving his discharge, he toured with many show bands that played all over the United States and in other parts of the world. Again…many interesting stories to tell! It was a hard way to live but he enjoyed playing and meeting all sorts of interesting and some famous people. After retiring from being on the road, Rich returned to St. Louis and played in various bands in and around the St. Louis area. Some of the great area musicians he played with include Michael Lacey, Terry Thompson, John Farrar, Eric Marshall, Lew Winer, Jan Ammerman, Harry Simon, Mike Bruce and the late Jules Blattner and Bennie Smith. Rich was a true musician and loved playing his drums. Not only did he bring his drum set on gigs, he would bring his conga drum, bongo drums, wind chimes and all sorts of other percussion instruments. He will surely be having a great time playing drums with Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and all of the other great drummers gone before. He may also belt out a song or two with Frank Sinatra and scat with Ella Fitzgerald. Besides his love of music, Rich was also an avid golfer. You can bet he will be getting in a few rounds of golf with Arnie and his favorite golfer, Ben Hogan. Rich was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joann, grandparents and step-grandfather. Besides his loving partner, Jan Metzler, Rich also leaves a brother, Eugene Hensley, a niece (Debbie Serot) and a nephew (Mike Hensley) along with their spouses and children. He also leaves countless students that found inspiration in his teaching. Many thanks go to Rich’s oncologist, Dr. Ted Thomas and his nurse, Kristin, at the VA Medical Center for their caring and support. In February of this year (on his birthday no less), Rich made the decision to discontinue chemo. Since January of this year, Rich had been receiving hospice care from VITAS Healthcare and many thanks go to all of the professionals at VITAS and, especially, his hospice nurse, Greg Pohlen. We couldn’t have asked for anyone better to take care of Rich! Many thanks also to VITAS hospice nurse Christine Bartner, who was with Rich and Jan to provide support and comfort on Sunday. Lastly, thanks to family, friends and co-workers for your love, support, caring and prayers during this difficult time. Much love to each and every one of you!
